Netflix announces "Stranger Things" prequel set in the 1950s, due in 2028

Netflix has officially announced a new live-action series from the "Stranger Things" universe. Its Polish title is "Stranger Things: Inne światy", and the original title is "Other Worlds: A Stranger Things Adventure". The premiere is planned for 2028.

What the teaser shows

The short teaser reveals that the story begins on 19 April 1955 in the town of Marion, Nevada. It shows an abandoned bicycle near a closed-off zone and the lights of a town in the distance. A mysterious phenomenon appears in the sky above.

A prequel with new characters

The series will be a prequel to both the original "Stranger Things" and the stage play "Stranger Things: The First Shadow". It is meant to tell an entirely new story, with new characters, themes and elements of mythology, while still linking to threads from earlier instalments.

Matt Duffer says the series will explain, among other things, the origin of the mysterious rock that young Henry Creel found in a scientist's suitcase in the Nevada caves. The Duffer brothers describe the project as "Stranger Things", but also something completely fresh.

Who is behind it

The project is led by Kate Trefry and Matt and Ross Duffer, the creators of the original series. Trefry is the writer and showrunner. Joe Wright, director of the films "Pride & Prejudice" and "Atonement", will direct the first three episodes. Shawn Levy is also among the executive producers.

Another spin-off

This is the second TV spin-off of "Stranger Things" and the third production expanding the universe beyond the main series, if the play "The First Shadow" is counted. Netflix previously released the animated series "Stranger Things: Tales from '85", set between the second and third seasons of the original.

Netflix has not yet revealed the cast or an exact premiere date.
